Up and running.
To-do list for today - and part of yesterday's.
Zipping around, feeling like the fast forward is stuck.
Do you ever feel like life has an out-of-control momentum?
As if you're always two steps behind even with your fastest pace?
If we step back, we realize that God did not make that pattern or set that pace.
So, why do we feel so stuck? So trapped?
The Lord directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously,
and he will give you everything you need.
Matthew 6:33
If God intends to direct our steps,
if His Kingdom is supposed to come first,
what actions are making that true in our lives?
Directions are written and spoken.
Am I reading and listening?
First means first.
What is first in my day?
God has created the whole world with beautiful balance and order.
The order has been disrupted, but if we go back to creation we can feel the rhythm.
The days have a rise and fall.
The work is marked with a pause.
Our God has created what is good with rhythm and harmony.
His order is pure and refreshing.
Sadly, our chaos has shattered the peace.
Sometimes it's more simple than we think.
I made a little song for my kids about following the Lord's patterns.
"When God brings the sun down
We go to sleep
When God brings the sun down
We go to sleep
When God brings the sun
back down from the sky
We jump in the bed and close our eyes.
When God brings the sun up
Then we can play
When God brings the sun up
Then we can play
When God brings the sun
back up in the clouds
We will sing and dance and jump around."
Just like my little ones need a reminder for bedtime,
I need to hear the voice of God, guiding me in each step.
It starts with the patterns, the basics.
Honor God with the basic obedience outlined in scripture.
As you find His rhythm in your rising and setting, you begin to find a new pace.
Then you see Him in the details.
You feel the stability.
And you begin to have what you need.
Lord, I give you all my days.
