Jesus never sugar-coated a talk with His disciples. He wanted them to understand what it really means to follow Him.
In Matthew 16:24, Jesus explains what is required. He tells them the cost after He explains the price He will soon pay. They don't understand it all, but He wants them to see that new life means letting go of an old one. Jesus is not calling us to add a life, but to let go of our life for a new one.
One life, not a mixture. A life surrendered and obedient. A life with purpose beyond ourselves.
Jesus modeled it perfectly and made it possible for us to have this new life.
